Sancta’s Common Areas
Founded in 1926, the College is located in a traditional sandstone building set amid beautiful gardens and a courtyard, with tennis/multipurpose courts and a sustainable vegetable garden.
Although Sancta is in the heart of Sydney, it is a tranquil haven for students and guests.
Grounds and Gardens
The College grounds are truly breathtaking. The sandstone College building dominates the stunning central quadrangle and the Sancta gardens are peaceful in every season.
It is hard to believe this retreat is only a short distance from the bustling centre of Australia’s largest and most dynamic city.
The Sancta Quadrangle
The beautiful Sancta Quadrangle is a central gathering point for everyone at Sancta at all times of the day. It is also a fantastic place for social events. Roses and an antique Florentine Well are the centrepieces of the Quad. Many of our bedrooms have an outlook into the Quadrangle.
Entrance
The driveway leads to the Foyer and Front Office where the friendly staff are available for students and visitors. The hall, lined with student year photos dating from 1926, leads to the beautiful Lower Common Room and beyond into the College.
Common Rooms
Adorned with leather sofas, stunning artwork and a grand piano, the Lower Common Room is used daily for gatherings, meetings, drinks, coffee, Formal Dinner evenings, special events, concerts, debates and exhibitions. You may use the room and the grand piano at any time.
The Octagon Common Room is a casual common room with comfortable couches, a kitchenette, snack and drink machines, table tennis table, flat screen HD TV with Foxtel and DVD player. The room overlooks the stunning gardens from every window.
Adjacent to the Octagon Common Room is the Senior Common Room which is a casual common room for postgraduates and visiting academics residing at the College. The Senior Common Room has all the features of the Octagon Common Room.
The Sheldon Dining Hall
Students gather in the beautiful Dining Hall for all meals on both relaxed and formal occasions.
Library
The College Library looks out to the peaceful Sancta Quadrangle. The incredible antique book collection creates a studious and inspiring atmosphere. It is a pleasant and popular spot to read the daily newspaper and for studying. The University of Sydney Libraries are a five minute walk from the College. It is worth noting, however, that Sancta students can readily access the
University’s online database from within the college. The library is also well equipped with computers, a printer and photocopier.
Tutorial & Music rooms
These rooms are used for private study and evening tutorials. Music practise is easily arranged in any of our common areas or in our dedicated soundproof music room.
Laundries
Laundries with coin operated washing machines and dryers, clothes lines, sinks and storage space (for detergents, pegs and other items) are located on each floor.
