Fundraising & the Sancta Sophia College Foundation
Sancta Sophia, in line with other University Colleges, has established a Foundation, which is a Trust Fund. The fund builds up a capital sum to be invested. The income produced serves to assist the College. The Fund is administered by a Board of Directors, elected annually from eligible members, and derives its money from donations and bequests.

Scholarship and Bursary Fund Appeal
Anyone who has attended Sancta Sophia College knows that it is a very special place. It is a home, a place where lifelong friendships are made, a place where every resident is nurtured and encouraged to walk in wisdom, to live in a supportive community and gradually find their place in the world. The College wishes to help make the Sancta experience a reality for more students, particularly those from an Indigenous background.
We recognise that attending University is a big step for many students. If this is combined with moving from a rural community to the city or from family support to a wider social network, living in a supportive community such as Sancta Sophia can be the difference between success and failure for many students.
We are seeking to offer more students, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous, the opportunities which a home away from home at Sancta Sophia College can provide.
It is evident that a number of students and their families are experiencing financial hardship as a result of the current economic climate, and that this is likely to continue for some time. We would like to respond generously to cases of genuine financial need, through an effective bursary program.
For many years, Sancta Sophia College has provided a number of merit based scholarships to new and continuing students, consisting of half scholarships (valued at $8360 depending on room allocation) and five entrance scholarships (each valued at $2,000). These scholarships have been funded by donations and bequests from ex-students and College benefactors over a number of years.
In addition to the above mentioned reasons, Sancta needs to increase its scholarship offering to also remain competitive with other Colleges in attracting first rate students. Other Colleges at the University of Sydney offer a substantially greater number of scholarships than Sancta Sophia is currently able to offer. Some talented students who would otherwise come to Sancta Sophia choose to go to other Colleges because they are offered scholarships.
To address these issues and to start the process of building a sustainable Scholarship and Bursary Fund for the long-term, we have set a four year target of a minimum of $1 million which will allow Sancta to increase the dollar amount of each scholarship and bursary and the number of scholarships offered. From the funds raised, we anticipate there will be an immediate distribution for scholarships and bursaries in the upcoming semesters.
To achieve this aim, we seek your support for the Sancta Sophia College Scholarship and Bursary Fund Appeal.
Your donations will allow Sancta to make an improvement to its Scholarship Program in 2012 and beyond. Our immediate aims for 2012 are to:
- Increase the number of scholarships available for Indigenous scholars for the 2012 academic year and beyond.
- Double the current number of scholarships from six to twelve to support a range of scholars at Sancta Sophia College.
- Contribute to the support of students who demonstrate a genuine financial need by increasing the funds available for bursaries.
To achieve these aims, we need the generous support of the entire Sancta Sophia College Alumnae as well as our male post-graduate Alumni.
You know from your own experience living at Sancta Sophia College what a special place it is, what an extraordinary time you had and how the memories and friends you made there have now built into a lifetime of friendships and experiences. Help share the Sancta experience with other young women and men. We encourage you to make a commitment that will continue over the life of the appeal.
All donations to the Sancta Sophia College Scholarship and Bursary Fund Appeal are tax-deductible. Please make a gift today.

The Future
Forward planning is essential for the continuing success of the College. The College Council believes it essential to provide an additional source of funding for scholarships, bursaries and other forms of financial assistance to ensure that the College is open to all, regardless of their economic circumstances.
Such projects as the development of computer technology, linking the College facilities with those of the University and a master building plan are envisaged as well as special and expensive maintenance of our buildings.
Scholarships
The Foundation offers a number of Half Scholarships for Academic Achievements, needs based, as well as Sports Scholarships. There are also bursaries available to students in need of financial assistance.
