Pathways for Young Women into Law Degrees
The workshop: “Pathways for Young Women into Law Degrees” was held at Sancta on Tuesday evening August 2nd for all current students interested in transferring into law, considering law as part of a combined degree or thinking about undertaking law as a post graduate.
The workshop was facilitated by one of our very own Alumni, law graduate and tutor, Galina Barrett and two members of the Sydney University Law School, Dr Arlie Loughnan and Mr Peter Finneran. The workshop covered important topics such as:
- Differences between Post Graduate Law (LLB) and a Juris Doctor
- International aspects of both degrees at the Sydney Law School
- Course programmes and academic progression
- Administrative transfer arrangements and application deadlines
- Course costs and scholarships, availability and deadlines.
The workshop not only imparted valuable knowledge to students it also provided them with encouragement and ideas. One first year student provided the following feedback:
“ I absolutely loved attending the Pathways for Young Women into Law dinner. They were extremely happy to give us any piece of information that we asked of them. They took into consideration our personal career paths and catered the conversation to fit the needs of everyone in the room. They also spoke about their own experiences and how these helped them to get to where they are today. They were very encouraging about our future endeavors and wished us all success in the future.
It was a very rewarding experience to have dinner with people who are so interesting and committed to their chosen field. I would definitely recommend inviting them back for another session.”
It is also part of broader initiatives: to recognise students’ transition beyond their current degree into the workforce or further study; and facilitating connections between Sancta Alumni, current students and the University.
