Sancta Sophia College Scholarships, Bursaries and Prizes

Cardinal Pell and Sister Elizabeth with Lily and Anna, recipients of the Archbishop's scholarshipScholarships are awarded each year to students who are academically gifted, with consideration being given to need. All scholarships are awarded for one year in the first instance and are renewed subject to academic progress.

Bursaries are awarded for students who seek financial assistance towards College fees.

Annual prize awards are given to students in recognition of academic achievement in the previous year.

All scholarship and bursary awards are paid as a credit towards the cost of College fees. The prize awards are paid to the recipient.

Foundation Scholarship

This is a half scholarship tenable during the time that the student remains in College, subject to annual review. The funds for this award are provided by the Sancta Sophia College Foundation.  Criteria for the award are similar to those for Entrance Scholarships.  It will next be offered in 2008.

The Archbishop of Sydney Academic Scholarship

This is a full scholarship awarded for up to three years to a student commencing a University of Sydney undergraduate degree. This scholarship is offered every second year and will next be offered in 2009.

This scholarship is awarded to a Catholic entrant to College on the basis of excellent results in the Higher School Certificate (or equivalent); high achievement in sporting and/or cultural areas; evidence through appropriate references of all-round involvement and leadership in school, community and parish; and consideration of financial circumstances. Continuation of the scholarship is dependent on achieving a distinction average.

Applications should be made on the Archbishop’s Scholarship Application form and sent to the Principal by 30 January 2009.

Entrance Scholarships

Five entrance scholarships valued at $2000 per year are awarded each year to first time applicants for residence at College and are tenable during the time that the student remains in College subject to annual review; normally a student would be expected to achieve a distinction average. They are awarded primarily on the basis of academic merit with consideration given to potential contribution to the College community, and the need for financial assistance. Applicants may be undergraduates in any year of their study. The scholarships are named after the following benefactors: Barbara Arnold, Olive Arnold, Giselle Dulieu, Lady Fairfax and Rosemary Morrow.

Annual Prizes

These prizes are valued at $500 and are awarded annually in recognition of academic excellence at the Annual Academic Formal Dinner. These are awarded to students continuing in residence and are determined by the university examination results and include publication on the Honour Boards of the College. The prizes are named in memory of previous College principals or by the name of generous donors to the College. The prizes include the Margaret MacRory Award, Lady Sheldon Award, Eileen Lyons Award, John Toohey Award, Amelie Salmon Award, Ranee Adams Flynn Award.

Sancta Sophia College bursaries

Residents in College may apply for financial assistance through the bursary program prior to entry or at any time during residence.

The Sancta Sophia College and Sydney University Sport Scholarships

This program is shared with Sydney University Sport who determine the awards. These scholarships may be for a specific sport or for all-round sports performance at a level not less than NSW state level. The award is reviewed annually for each recipient. The scholarship is valued at $1500, which is matched by Sydney University Sport.
