A word from the Principal
By Elizabeth Hepburn IBVM
In my imagination prior to taking up this position the notion of the university as a place of intelligent conversation took
prime place. Why conversation? Let me quote Timothy Radcliffe OP who wrote in the American National Catholic
Reporter on 5 May 2006. More
Vale Speech 2005
By Sarah Steele, Senior Student
Good evening Mrs Walsh, our wonderful members of
staff past and present, high table, freshers (soon to be
sophomores), sophomores (soon to be seniors), postgraduates,
graduands and valetants. Three years ago when I
arrived at Sancta, I knew instantly that I was in for the time of
my life but not even my wildest dreams could have prepared
me for my years at college. More
Cultural Chronicles
By Julia Jones, Culture Secretary
There is so much to be said for the cultural divas at the
end of this year. The first event of the year, Intercol
debating, held much promise with the team under
enormous expectation after last year’s victory. The team,
consisting of Ali Lee, Kate Montague, Alexandra Murray
(debating secretary), Steph Cannavo and Sarah Stanford strove
valiantly to make us proud but the competition was fierce and
a victory dinner was not forthcoming. More
Medical Revue 2005: My one and only foray backstage
By Claire Stewart, Post Graduate
I love the theatre. There’s something magical about the lights going up, the curtain pulling back and
someone starting a story right before your eyes. This was what I was imagining when I volunteered to
produce this year’s Medical Revue. Little did I know that all the magic is actually the result of a long
process. More
Sports Report
By Alison Lee, Sports Secretary
Sport began swimmingly in Semester 1, with the swim
team lapping for Sancta in fine style. The girls did us
proud for a fabulous night of cheering and a superb 3rd
placing in the swimming and 5th in diving. Rowing came
second, and the girls pulled for Sancta in the best way they
knew how, with the SANCTA letters cheering them on from
the banks. Netball was a blast; we all enjoy going down to the
Fisher courts and having a bit of a friendly yell while our girls
give it some great shots. Hockey takes us a little further away,
but the Concord courts are always pleasant for an afternoon of great sporting entertainment. Again, the girls did us immensely
proud. More
International Intercollegiate Fresher Report
By Renee Gilmore
Being the fresher representative at Sancta has provided me with so much excitement, none of which compares to the excitement I felt when I received an offer to live at Sancta in the mail. For me Sancta is a sanctuary, a safe and relaxing place to come home to at the end of a busy day. I have grown leaps and bounds in my first year at Sancta and I am grateful to have experienced everything that I have. More
The facination of Egypt
By Judith Brophy 1948–1950, BA (Sydney) 1951,
PhD (Macquarie) 1999
Having been asked to write a short piece about what I
have been doing in the latter stages of my life, I
started reviewing attitudes and ambitions I may have
had when I was a student at Sancta just after the Second World
War. In those days I could never have imagined that my life’s
journey would have taken me to Egypt. More
A student in Pompeii
By Lily Withycome Tapperall
In July - August 2005, I was one amongst the twenty
students accepted into the Pompeii Archaeological
Research Project at the Porta Stabia (PARP:PS). This was
directed jointly by Dr. Gary Devore of Stanford University and
Dr. Steven Ellis, a Sydney University graduate and a current
Michigan University lecturer. The goal of the project is to
uncover the structural and occupational history of the south
east corner of Insula VIII.7, from its earliest origins through to
79 AD, the time of Vesuvius’ explosion. 2005 saw its first
season. More
Twenty year reunion: Freshers of 1985
Some of us missed the 20-year reunion in October 2005
as were having babies (Gay Clery, Veronica Lowrey and
Bridget Sullivan). A group of us held a Reunion in
Sydney on the weekend 25-26 March 2006. More
