Meals – Casual and Formal Dinners

Girls in dining roomSancta Sophia has the reputation of serving excellent cuisine. The College is unusual in that it does not have a catering company involved in supplying meals. In its place the College has its own Chefs. The Head Chef, Greg, has been at the College for twelve years.

All special dietary needs are catered for. The college provides three meals a day seven days a week. A formal Dinner is held every Monday evening. A barbeque is held periodically on weekends.

A typical menu for any given day is as follows:

Breakfast
O-week dessertsA wide variety of cereal and milk types, assorted varieties of bread, crumpets, pikelets, juices, fruits, yoghurt, and spreads. A hot breakfast comprising pancakes, bacon, eggs, fried tomatoes and hash browns is served twice a week.

Lunch and dinner
A smorgasbord of fresh salads, fruit and vegetables and cold meats is available along with assorted breads and spreads. Hot meals including low-calorie and vegetarian options, and a variety of vegetables and rice, are available at lunch and dinner times. There are also facilities to make toasted sandwiches and a great new self-serve smoothie bar.

If a student cannot make it back to College during the day, a packed lunch can be arranged. A late dinner can be provided if, and when, necessary.

Cultural dinnerFormal College Dinners – Monday evenings

As part of College tradition, Sancta Sophia hosts a Formal Dinner each Monday evening. College residents gather in academic dress in the Sheldon Dining Hall.

Speakers are cordially invited to attend formal College dinners. Speakers present an aspect related to their career or field of expertise. This is an exciting part of the evening’s events.

Formal Dinners are an ideal occasion for the whole College to gather together. This is a highly valued tradition at the College. At pre-dinner drinks or coffee students can chat informally with the guest speaker. Live music is always a feature.

Other special occasions on which formal Dinner is served include the following:

  • The Archbishop’s Dinner;
  • The Alumnae Dinner;
  • Mother and Daughter evenings; and
  • Father and Daughter evenings.

To celebrate the relationship of parent and daughter, the college organises a Mother-Daughter, and a Father-Daughter dinner. These evenings of Dinner and entertainment allow parents to meet their daughter’s friends and allow parents to meet and socialise with each other. Each function is held close to the dates of Mother's and Father's Day.
