Postgraduates – Accommodation, Responsibility and Employment

International post graduate studentsSancta Sophia offers residency to postgraduate men and women. The College prides itself on being able to provide members of the Senior Common Room (SRC) opportunities of responsibility and employment as well as a sense of camaraderie, community and support.

Our current SCR includes a number of international postgraduates studying at the University of Sydney in a variety of fields including Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science, Law, Arts and Music.

Accommodation is available on a semester or annual basis on application to the Principal.

In addition to their own studies, postgraduates may assist with informal tutoring of Sancta undergraduates. The College is also able to offer postgraduate residents positions of part-time employment in the roles of College Tutors, and Duty Residents.

Many of the postgraduate bedrooms have ensuite bathrooms and are generally located in the quieter areas of the College. Postgraduates have access to their own Common Room furnished with leather lounges, fridge and cable television.

Meet Sancta's postgraduates.

Joanne LauWhat our postgraduates say

Living at Sancta has made life as a graduate student so much easier. Everything I need is at the doorstep. The campus, the libraries, the coffee shops and the Grose Farm Hotel.

My morning commute takes about three minutes and when I get home there are never dirty dishes to wash or meals to plan, leaving far more time with which to study or procrastinate.

On the practical side, many of the graduate rooms are large with their own ensuite bathroom. Each room has access to the university network, guaranteeing fast and reliable internet access.

Furthermore, most graduates are able to work at the college. The tutoring opportunities help ease the financial burden of student life and are also quite rewarding.

Socially, the graduate students at the college who form the Senior Common Room are usually a pretty friendly bunch. Pub trivia is taken very seriously. There are a number of inter-collegiate SCR events each semester, where graduate students from all the colleges get together to eat cheese, drink wine and complain about their respective academic burden. Add the invites to regular Sancta functions and the calendar can be as hectic as you allow.

Once you arrive, the idea of moving back into the real world quickly loses its appeal.

Members of the SRCI moved to Sancta when I enrolled in a Bachelor of Science (Adv) at the University of Sydney. Being only 17 at the time and from Brisbane (Qld), it was a big move. In all honesty, I haven't really had time to look back! Sancta has allowed me to experience University life in all its diversity – the socialising, the drama, the spirit and (sometimes) the study!

It's allowed me to star in and direct a play, sing in choir, form close friendships with a group of fabulous women and take on leadership roles (as Cultural Secretary). These are the extras that make College life so much more valuable than a share house (plus we don't have to cook!).

I've returned, having graduated from Science, to begin a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery. It's a busy course, so I'm glad to live nearby with the support of some wonderful staff and students.

One day, I hope to return to the Alumnae dinner as a successful psychiatrist. In the meantime, I am thrilled to be a member of the wonderful Sancta Sophia community.
