Undergraduate Senior Student, Lily Betland, welcomed Sancta’s newest students at our Commencement Dinner on Saturday 14 February 2026 with the following address.

Before I say too much, I want you to do something with me.
Take a breath.
Not a polite one - a proper one.
Now, look around the room. Slowly. Take your time. Feel that energy. The people sitting around you. The tables. The artwork. The lights. The sounds. The smell. This moment - right here, right now - will never exist again.
Because the truth is, you’ve been standing on one side of a door. And all that's been awaiting you - every laugh, every challenge, every friendship, every memory - is on this side.
You’ve cautiously opened that door, you’ve nervously walked through it, you have finally arrived.
Good evening, everyone. I’m Lily, your 2026 Senior Student. On behalf of our incredible house committee, amazing Welcome Week leaders, wonderful RAs,
and extraordinary staff, WELCOME to Sancta Sophia College.
Tonight marks not just another beginning. Tonight, you join a story that has been unfolding for 100 years.
For a century, students have sat in your seat. For a century, freshers have taken that same breath. For a century they’ve worn the red and white. For 100 years, hands have anxiously reached for and opened those same doors.
A century of inspiring stories, memories and moments that still shape this place.
And tonight - you joined that story. The legacy of Sancta.
I travelled here believing I was just moving into accommodation. I imagined college would simply be where I slept while everything transpired elsewhere. But Sancta has a way of making small moments matter. Shared meals have become grounding points. Passing conversations have developed into lifelong friendships. Smiles have grown into bonds never broken, red and white quickly became my favourite colours. Slowly, this place stops being just where you stay, and starts feeling where you belong.
I was completely unaware I unlocked the doors into a community that would quietly and profoundly change me in so many ways.
Somewhere along this journey, this building stopped being temporary. It became home.
To our new students, our freshers: showing up tonight, standing here, stepping through these doors - that is enough. You won’t know where you fit yet. Your confidence will grow. You will build certainty.
Tonight you only need courage - the bravery you showed to open that door, to evolve into something bigger than yourself, and to trust that something extraordinary is waiting. A door that has welcomed apprehensive first nights, proud last nights and all the instinctive moments in between. And now you join us on this adventure. THE ADVENTURE OF THE CENTURY.
And so, in the spirit of our Centenary Year, let me really quickly share just a 100 reasons why you’re going to love Sancta.
Reason one: The Sancta community.
The ones you’ll meet tonight.
The ones you’ll sit with tomorrow.
The ones you haven't met yet.
The ones who will challenge you, laugh with you, lean on you, cheer for you, cry with you, walk beside you through it all.
Reason two: The spontaneous moments.
The hallway chats, the quick, warm smiles, the conversations that last longer than dinner, the quiet occasions that evolve into memories you never expected.
Reason three: The pride. The spirit.
Red and white aren't just colours.
It’s a magnificent feeling.
It’s being someone's biggest cheerleader, it’s finding the bravery to sign up for a new opportunity, it’s laughing together.
Finally, the realisation you belong here.
Reason four: The growth.
The smallest steps, the quietest victories, dreams conquered the courage to try, to fail, to rise again.
And the discovery that just maybe you’re capable of more than you ever imagined.
Reason five: Those doors - Walk with Wisdom.
Because every day you’ll open them.
Some days exhausted, some days unsure, other days excited.
But every day, stepping into a community accepting you exactly as you are.
Reason six: Just kidding.
I could give you 100.
Don’t worry - I won’t tonight.
There’s no doubt you’ll find your own one hundred reasons very soon. Because this moment - your arrival in Sancta’s Centenary year - is extraordinary. You didn’t just open any typical door. You’ve been written into history.
The legacy of Sancta.
And now, let's go back to the beginning.
Take another breath. Glance around the room again. Take your time. I want you to remember tonight as the moment you arrived.
This is your beginning, your journey, your story.
Welcome to Sancta Sophia College
We are so incredibly excited this historical chapter begins with you.
