Dr Susan Kelly, Alumna Fresher 1957
In August 2024, we were saddened to learn of the passing of one of Sancta’s most steadfast supporters, Dr Susan (Sue) Kelly, at age 84. Sue was a remarkable woman who touched the lives of many with her formidable intelligence, compassion, and dedication to the medical field and the Sancta community.
Sue graduated from the University of Sydney in 1963 with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB BS) and later earned her Fellowship of the Faculty of Anaesthetists of the Royal College of Surgeons (FFARCS). She held notable positions throughout her career, including Honorary Anaesthetist at St George Hospital and Mater Misericordiae Hospital, and Visiting Anaesthetist at the Repatriation Hospital, Concord.
A proud Sancta resident from 1957 to 1962, Sue served on the student executive team and remained deeply connected to the College as an alumna. She contributed significantly through roles on the Ex-students’ Association Committee, the College Council (1993–2010), and as a member of the Treasures’ Committee. Sue’s dedication earned her the title of Honorary Fellow of the College in 2013.
Sue was also passionate about supporting young women in STEM, establishing scholarships and mentoring students. Her generosity and support have provided opportunities for many students, both during their time at Sancta and as they launched their professional careers. Sue is pictured above (holding flowers) with her current scholar, Natalie, an Aerospace Engineering student at UNSW, whose journey to Sancta and university was made possible by Sue’s support.
Sue was an incredible woman who maintained an enthusiastic interest in the life of the College until she passed. She will be remembered for her dedication to her family, her scholars, and the Sancta community.
